EThekwini energy efficiency schools competition

R60 000 is up for grabs in the City’s Energy Efficiency Schools Competition this year. Learners from high schools across eThekwini are encouraged to participate.

This year, learners are expected to design and construct a model using recycled material that demonstrates a green building and sustainable living on their own, with only guidance from a teacher or parent. Learners will also be required to present the project to a panel of judges.

The Energy Efficiency Schools Competition, led by the Climate Change Mitigation Branch, is a transformative initiative designed to promote sustainable energy practices within the educational sector in eThekwini.

Dr Luyanda Mafumbu, Deputy Director of the Climate Change Department said: “This contest is an integral part of the Municipality’s broader Climate Action Strategy, aimed at fostering a culture of energy conservation and environmental stewardship among learners, teachers, and school communities.”

Dr Mafumbu encouraged learners to participate in this interactive contest.

Sindile Buthelezi, Energy Efficiency Manager agreed adding: “The Energy Efficiency Schools Competition seeks to encourage active participation from schools across the Municipality. Participating schools will have the opportunity to showcase their commitment to sustainability by implementing practical, innovative energy-saving measures at their schools.”

These measures may include reducing electricity consumption, promoting renewable energy sources, optimising natural lighting and ventilation, conducting energy audits, and integrating climate change education into the curriculum.

The contest is structured to be both educational and competitive, with schools assessed on their ability to achieve measurable energy savings, their creativity in implementing energy-efficient practices, and their success in engaging learners, teachers, and parents in sustainability efforts.

At the conclusion of the contest, outstanding schools will be recognised and rewarded for their efforts. Prizes may include energy-efficient equipment, certificates of recognition, and opportunities for selected learners and teachers to participate in climate change and sustainability training programmes.

By engaging the next generation in energy conservation and climate action, the Energy Efficiency Schools Competition aims to create lasting positive change within school communities, contribute to the Municipality’s energy efficiency targets, and inspire a future generation of environmentally conscious leaders, added Buthelezi.
