ETHEKWINI Deputy Mayor Councillor Zandile Myeni has commended the Run for Unity race, thanking the Consulate General of India for building bridges between the people of South Africa and India. Deputy Mayor Myeni was speaking at the Run for Unity Race which took place on 31 January as India celebrated 76 years of being a republic.
The City also welcomed the Naval Ship, Tushil which visited the Port of Durban from 29 January to 1 February as part of enhancing cooperation between the Indian Navy and the South African Navy. Deputy Mayor Myeni said events such as the Run for Unity race are key in promoting a healthy lifestyle. “These events are also aligned to the City’s strategy to grow sports tourism in eThekwini to compete with other world-class cities to become a sporting mecca,” she said.
EThekwini boasts world-class sporting infrastructure and is home to enthusiastic sports fans, she said. “It is for this reason we continue to work with relevant stakeholders to use sports as a catalyst for economic and social development. As a nation, we have seen how sports can promote social cohesion as the nation comes together to support our sporting heroes and celebrate their success,” she added.
