Tree assistants employed by the City showed off their tree cutting skills and knowledge of a chainsaw during a Chainsaw Competition.
TREE assistants from across the City showed off their prowess with a chainsaw during the recent Chainsaw Competition at the Durban Botanic Gardens. Spearheaded by the Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit, the competition aimed to promote a clean and well-maintained City, but to also motivate and enhance the skills of tree cutters. Contestants had to demonstrate their skills and knowledge by cutting a tree log in the fastest possible time. Chairperson of the Community Services Committee Councillor Zama Sokhabase commended tree assistants for their hard work. “I have realised that this is not just about cutting trees, it is hard work that requires skill and effort to operate a chainsaw,” she said. Councillor Sokhabase encouraged tree assistants to be cautious when working as the jobs came with some risk.
Launce Allistar Johnson, who emerged victorious in this competition, said he was grateful to win. “I am grateful of this opportunity and for the continued support from management. This has been a very encouraging and motivating experience as we strive to deliver services to communities.” Zithathele Jali took second place while Denver Pillay was announced as the third-place winner in the competition.
