• What is sustainability all about?
Quite simply, Sustainability is about ensuring that our earth’s resources are conserved for to meet the needs of future generations.

  • Why is the City hosting the exhibition of this nature?
    1. Our vision is to become Africa’s most caring and livable city, therefore sustainability is important in ensuring that the city has resources to satisfy the needs of our citizens in future.
    2. We need to build a resilient city that would be able to withstand the impacts of climate change and all the other societal pressures that we face.
    3. But it’s not only that. Globally, there has been a move to make cities more resilient. The United Nations recently adopted the Sustainable Development Goals that we have aligned to as a country and as a city. Sustainability and resilience has been written into the policies of national, provincial and local government.
    4. More than half the world’s population lives in cities, and urban centres face immense pressure due to that. We all need to do our part to ensure that our cities remain sustainable and resilient as we move forward. • What are some of the impacts of climate change on Durban?
    1. As a coastal city, it is predicted that Durban will suffer from sea level rise. This will impact our infrastructure and investment on the beachfront in years to come. The city is looking into ways of mitigating the impact that sea level rise will have on the city.
    2. Again being a coastal city, plastic pollution is affecting our oceans and marine life. This is a worldwide phenomenon, but our oceans and marine life is something that we must protect as they serve a vital role in creating a natural balance.
    3. There will be severe droughts and also severe storms and flooding
    4. Climate change will also impact on food security and health due to environmental impacts. This is not only relevant to Durban, but cities all around the world.
